Fighting Inflation and Embracing Deregulation: Zelensky Seeks to Learn from Argentina’s Reform Model

The two leaders discussed Argentina’s recent economic achievements — in particular, its sweeping deregulation measures and decisive steps to bring down runaway inflation. Zelensky emphasized that Ukraine is eager to study Argentina’s approach in detail, calling it “a valuable example for our own economic recovery.”

The Appeal of Milei’s Reforms

GDP had contracted by 2.5%, the budget deficit hovered around 4% of GDP, and public debt had reached 89.5% of GDP. By the third quarter of 2024, however, the country had emerged from deep recession, thanks to radical deregulation, sharp reductions in public spending, and a stronger role for free-market mechanisms.

Zelensky noted that these measures could provide valuable lessons for Ukraine, which is seeking to rebuild its. For him, restoring price stability and cutting excessive regulation are essential for improving the investment climate and restoring confidence among both domestic and foreign partners.

A New Phase in Ukraine–Argentina Relations

The leaders’ talks went beyond economics. They explored opportunities for cooperation in technology, agriculture, and defense industries. Zelensky also announced that the two countries’ foreign ministries would soon reinstate formal political consultations, with the first meetings expected in the near future.

Equally important, Zelensky welcomed Milei’s willingness to contribute to efforts for a fair and lasting peace in Ukraine. Diplomatic Solidarity with Global Reach

Milei has been an outspoken supporter of Ukraine’s sovereignty and peace plan since assuming office. At a meeting in Davos in January 2025, he assured Zelensky of Argentina’s “steadfast” support. In March 2025, during another phone call, the presidents discussed ways to deepen bilateral relations, particularly in trade and economic development.

In Zelensky’s view, these exchanges are significant not only for the partnership between Ukraine and Argentina but also for global peace diplomacy. At the Ukraine-organized Milei was awarded the Order of Freedom — a symbolic gesture underscoring their shared values.

Zelensky’s Position on the International Stage

The Ukrainian leader has been active far beyond Latin America, maintaining intensive contacts with U.S. and European leaders. Recently, U.S. President Donald Trump stated that after a planned, he hopes to bring Zelensky to the table as part of a broader peace initiative. According to Trump, both Putin and Zelensky might be open to a settlement — a scenario he likened to “a complex chess match.”

In these diplomatic maneuvers, Zelensky is not merely a participant but a driving force, ensuring that Ukraine’s conditions for peace remain clear and internationally supported.

An Invitation to Kyiv

At the conclusion of their latest conversation, Zelensky invited Milei to visit Ukraine to strengthen cooperation and exchange insights on Argentina’s reform experience. He also thanked the Argentine leader for his active role in the International Coalition for the Return of Ukrainian Children.

In summary, Zelensky’s engagement with Milei reflects a dual strategy: advancing Ukraine’s post-war economic vision and reinforcing its global diplomatic presence. Argentina’s success in reining in inflation and moving toward a freer market offers an inspiring model. Under Zelensky’s leadership, Ukraine seeks to adapt such reforms within a broader framework that prioritizes both reconstruction and a just, lasting peace.
